Cathay Pacific is widely considered to be one of the best airlines in the world. They do, however, block certain seats (including my favorite First Class cabin seat) as “Preferred” on their flights. Luckily there is a quick and easy way to select these seats!
I recently flew Cathay Pacific First Class from Hong Kong to Chicago. The flight (like all of Cathay’s flights to/from the US) was operated by a 777-300ER. The First Class cabin on Cathay’s 777’s feature just 6 seats – 2 of which are blocked as Preferred seats – 2A and 2K.
I largely prefer the ‘A’ seats in Cathay Pacific’s First Class cabin as they offer the most privacy since that aisle is only shared by 2 seats (as opposed to 4 seats sharing the D/K seats aisle). Unfortunately, seat 2A (my favorite), is deemed a Preferred seat by Cathay Pacific.
Luckily, it is pretty easy to get Cathay Pacific to assign you 2A or 2K. All you have to do is have your Cathay Pacific record locator (which you can obtain from the airline you booked the flight through) ready and call 1-800-233-2742. Remember that if you booked your flight using AAdvantage miles, that you will have to call American Airlines to obtain the Cathay Pacific specific record locator as it is different from the record locator that AA provides you. Once you connect with a CSR, simply inform them that you would like to select seat 2A or 2K (or one of the other Preferred seats in the cabins) on your flight and they should be able to get you in that seat!
It is worth noting that 2A and 2K are usually reserved for travelers who need a seat for their bassinet, so you may get bumped from the seat if there is someone in the cabin who needs a bassinet seat. I have also ready reports of the Cathay Pacific system automatically booting people out of those seats if they requested them more than 6 months prior to departure. In that scenario, all you would have to do is call Cathay Pacific again and re-request that seat.
While you really cannot go wrong with any seat in the Cathay Pacific First Class cabin, it is still nice to have the option to select the “best of the best” seats in the cabin. Thankfully it is as simple as making a quick phone call to Cathay Pacific!
Have any of you utilized this method to obtain a Preferred seat on Cathay Pacific?
