Earn A 20% Bonus On Starpoints Converted To AA Miles

Through September 14, 2016, American Airlines is offering a 20% bonus on SPG Starpoints converted to AAdvantage miles! Even better, this bonus is in addition to the 5,000 point bonus SPG offers if you transfer Starpoints in blocks of 20,000.

Please note, I do not earn a commission off of any of the credit card links contained herein. I do, however, earn a referral bonus of points from some of the links contained herein. These referral links are currently the highest publicly available offers and I will always link to the highest publicly available offer for your benefit.  As always, your support by signing up via my referral links is greatly appreciated!

SPG Starpoints are probably the most versatile and coveted among the transferable currencies. That is because they offer some of the best value around. This is especially true for transfers to airline partners as SPG offers a 5,000 mile bonus for every 20,000 Starpoints you transfer. SPG offers (through American Express) only 2 cards that earn SPG Starpoints – the SPG Personal card and the SPG Business card. Neither card offers category bonuses outside of spend at SPG properties, though these cards get the majority of my non-category bonus spend as you can never have enough Starpoints in my opinion.

To make the SPG airline transfer even better, between August 1, 2016, and September 14, 2016, you will earn a 20% bonus on all Starpoints transferred to the AAdvantage program!

This 20% bonus stacks on top of the 5,000 point bonus that SPG offers when you transfer Starpoints in chunks of 20,000. The 20% bonus comes from AAdvantage and per the terms and conditions, should post to your AAdvantage account within 7 business days after your transferred points have posted to your AAdvantage account.

It is worth mentioning that Preferred SPG members have a minimum transfer amount of 2,500 Starpoints, Gold SPG members have a minimum transfer amount of 1,500 Starpoints and Platinum SPG members have no minimum transfer requirement. While there is no overall limit to the number of Starpoints you can transfer, you are limited to transferring 79,999 Starpoints per 24-hour period. That means that if you plan on taking advantage of the 5,000 point transfer bonus and are planning on transferring 80,000 or more Starpoints, you are better off breaking these transactions up over several days to ensure you receive the 5,000 point transfer bonus.

So is this a worthwhile offer? If you have a redemption in mind, I would say this absolutely is a worthwhile offer! Here is a quick breakdown of what the bonus offers:

  • You convert 20,000 Starpoints to 20,000 AAdvantage miles.
  • Since you transferred 20,000 Starpoints, you receive a 5,000 point bonus for a total of 25,000 AAdvantage miles.
  • American Airlines will then give you a 20% bonus on those 25,000 AAdvantage miles for a total of 30,000 AAdvantage miles.

This means that the transfer ratio from SPG to AAdvantage is effectively 2:3 when you transfer in chunks of 20,000 Starpoints. That is probably the best transfer ratio I have seen between SPG and AAdvantage.

So let’s take a look at some of the redemptions and their cost in Starpoints. Here is the AAdvantage partner award chart for flights from the United States:

Here are some of the sweet spots with this transfer bonus:

  • For 40,000 Starpoints you can fly between the United States and Asia 1 in business class.
  • For 60,000 Starpoints you can fly between the United States and Asia 1 in first class.
  • For 20,000 Starpoints you can fly between the United States and Europe, South America 1 or South America 2 in economy class.
  • For 20,000 Starpoints you can fly roundtrip between the United States and Alaska, Canada and the Continental United States in economy class.
  • For 20,000 Starpoints you can fly between the United States and South America 1 in business class.

If you happen to have AAdvantage miles already, this offer can also be a great way to top off your account for that next great trip!

Final Thoughts

I am a little surprised that this was not more widely announced by either American Airlines or SPG, though I guess that is why I have a job, huh? I personally have a glut of AAdvantage miles, so I likely will not be taking advantage (ha!) of this transfer bonus, but it does seem like quite a solid deal if you have a particular redemption in mind.

Will you be taking advantage of this transfer bonus?
