While I love travel and the points and miles game, my first true love has always been cars. I am such a car guy that I actually picked my primary rental car company – National – because they will always go out of their way to get me a sports car when I request one. Who wants a Hyundai Elantra when you can cruise around in a 300 horsepower Ford Mustang? So when I heard about Silvercar, the rental car company that rents nothing but silver Audi A4’s, I was pretty intrigued. It seems that Audi is pretty intrigued by the rental car startup as well as they just completed a $28 million series-C investment in the company.
Silvercar is a rental car startup company that rents nothing but silver Audi A4’s that are equipped with factory navigation, on-board wifi and satellite radio. While a lot of the rental car companies (like Hertz and Avis) have tried to get into the premium rental car business, Silvercar is the only one that offers their cars with factory navigation and on-board wifi included in the cost of your rental. Currently, Silvercar is only available at 12 airport locations in the US:
Austin – AUS
Chicago O’Hare – ORD
Dallas Love Field – DAL
Dallas/Fort Worth – DFW
Denver – DEN
Fort Lauderdale – FLL
Las Vegas – LAS
Los Angeles – LAX
Miami – MIA
New York City – JFK
Phoenix – PHX
San Francisco – SFO
Apparently this idea for a rental fleet of nothing but silver Audi A4’s was enough for Audi to want to get in on the program by investing $28 million in the company. Audi’s North American president Scott Keogh will also be joining Silvercar’s board of directors.
Silvercar’s service does not just offer customers access to a luxury rental vehicle, but it also streamlines the reservation and payment process by allowing you to book your vehicle via their mobile app and even unlock your rental car just by scanning a QR code!
I have been dying to try Silvercar and do a review of the product they offer, but I never seem to be in their rental cities when I need a car. Thankfully I will be doing a mileage run later this year where I should be able to rent one of their cars for a day so stay tuned for a review coming shortly!
It is clear that Silvercar is trying to do something different that differentiates themselves from the crowd – and it appears that it is working given Audi’s recent investment. I certainly look forward to giving them a try later this year.
Has anyone else rented from Silvercar? How was the experience?
