Through October 10, 2016, American Express is offering a 50% bonus on Membership Rewards points that are transferred to the British Airways Executive Club program!
I am a pretty big fan of British Airways Avios as they are a fantastic way to book premium cabins on a lot of really great routes. For example, I have used Avios to fly Tokyo-Haneda (HND) to Hong Kong (HKG) and Hong Kong (HKG) to Singapore (SIN) on Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong (HKG) to Chongqing (CKG) on Dragon Air and Lima (LIM) to Buenos Aires (EZE) on LAN – all in business class. In fact, transferring Membership Rewards points to British Airways used to be my absolute favorite transfer for my MRs. That all changed though when Amex lowered the transfer ratio from 1:1 to 1:0.8.
Thankfully, through October 10, 2016, all MR transfers to British Airways will earn a 50% transfer bonus!
That makes the effective transfer ratio 1:1.2, which is not as good as we have seen in the past, but is still better than the transfer ratio of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways.
While I do not like to speculatively transfer points, I do use Avios quite often and do not personally value MRs very highly, so this is one of the rare cases where I will probably speculatively transfer a chunk of my MRs. With that said, I do not recommend speculative points transfers unless you do have a specific use in mind or know you will use a certain points currency with pretty good regularity.
Although the transfer ratio for Membership Rewards points to Avios is not as good as it used to be, it is nice to see at least that Amex is stepping up and still offering transfer bonuses like this. I am not huge on speculative transfers, though I have to say I will probably take advantage of this offer as I use Avios quite often. In any case, a 50% bonus is quite generous and great to see!
Will any of you be utilizing this offer?
